Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great instrument for political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of juries. In the course of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. She was hired in 1999 and established her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
